Guan Shanyue Art Museum reopens

THE Guan Shanyue Art Museum reopened Tuesday after one year’s renovation, with two exhibitions specially arranged for the National Day holidays: the 11th China National Fine Arts Exhibition, and Guan Shanyue’s Overseas Sketches.

Named after the celebrated Chinese painter Guan Shanyue (1912-2000), the museum opened to the public in 1997. Ten years later, in 2007, when Shenzhen public museums and galleries were required to open free to the public, the operator realized it was time to refurbish the out-of-date facilities.

“The newly opened museum has become a public-service-oriented facility, which aims to provide more relaxation areas for visitors,” said Chen Xiangbo, curator of the museum.

The China National Fine Arts Exhibition features 463 prize candidates chosen from around 5,000 entries from all over the country, in four major design categories: graphic, fashion, industrial and environmental.

The Guan Shanyue’s Overseas Sketches exhibition includes 59 sketches the artist made around the time of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

From Oct. 11 to 12, an international design forum will be held in the museum, with designers from around the world participating in discussions on the theme of how to share the values of design in a globalized world.
