Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games Overview

Held once every four years, the East Asian Games (EAG) is a major event in the Asian international sports arena. The first EAG was held in China (Shanghai) in 1993, followed by Korea (Pusan) in 1997, Japan (Osaka) in 2001 and Macau in 2005.

Hong Kong won the hosting right of the 5th East Asian Games of 2009 in November 2003. The 5th East Asian Games Planning Committee was established by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in June 2004 to oversee and steer the organization of the 2009 EAG. In addition, 2009 East Asian Games (Hong Kong) Limited, registered as a company limited by guarantee, has been established for the implementation and delivery of the EAG.

The 5th East Asian Games will be held in Hong Kong from 5 – 13 December 2009. Over 3,000 elite athletes will compete for gold medals of 281 competition events under 23 sports, making it the largest international multi-sport event ever held in Hong Kong.

To showcase the creativity of Hong Kong people, design competitions on the emblem, slogan and thematic venues have been organized in order to draw public participation. The five-colour fireworks graphics of the 2009 East Asian Games emblem make reference to the five Olympic rings, and the sparkling fireworks symbolize the energy of athletes striving to fulfil their potential and to achieve sporting excellence.

Our slogan “Be the Legend” represents the unique characteristics of athletes and Hong Kong people. All winning athletes will themselves be legends and admired by all.

Our mascots “Dony” & “Ami” adopted fire and lion as creative elements in the design which convey the continuously striving and mutually helping spirit of Hong Kong people highlighted in a Cantonese oldie “Below the Lion Rock”. The fireworks pattern on their bodies echoes the emblem, representing people of different races gathering in Hong Kong as well as the cohesive force which brings people of Hong Kong to participate in the Games.

Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games is more than a sports event. It is the first time for the city to host a large-scale multi-sport international event. It is an important milestone for Hong Kong. Let’s all join hands to be part of the Legend and make the Games the most successful EAG in history!
