Enquiry for the procedures of marriage registration in Macao

We received your e-mail for the above enquiry, since you are not a Macao resident, we would like to know whether your boyfriend is a Macao resident or possesses the Identity Card for non-resident worker, because one of the parties intending to marry has to be a habitual resident of Macao.  If you fulfill this condition, please refer to the following procedures and necessary documents:

An application is made by means of a declaration by both parties intending to marry or by one of the parties and an individual authorized by the other party in the Civil Affairs Registry (CRC), with the following documents:

1.          Originals and photocopies of the identity documents of both parties intending to marry (in case one of the parties is a foreign national, the legal documents for his entry into Macao, such as the original and photocopy of his passport and entry card, have to be presented);

2.          Birth certificates of both parties;

-      An individual born in Macao, whose birth certificate is archived in the Civil Affairs Registry (CRC), may be exempted from submitting his birth certificate;

-       An individual born in China has to submit a notarial certificate of birth issued by China;

-      An individual born in any other country or region has to submit a birth certificate recognized by the laws of the country or region of his birth.

3.          Other situations:

a)       An individual who is not a habitual resident of Macao has to submit a Certificate of Capacity to Marry or a Marital Status Certificate issued by the competent authority of the country or territory of his habitual residence within the last 6 months;

b)      Those who are Macau identity cardholders, whether they possess the passports or the identity cards of other regions, as long as the marital status of their identity cards is marked as single and the person involved also declares himself/ herself as single, and no matter when they settle down in Macau, they do not need to submit the certificate which can prove that they are singles issued by other regions or countries.

c)       In case a party intending to marry is a widower, widow or divorcee, he has to submit a Marital Status Certificate, but if that fact was already registered in the Civil Affairs Registry (CRC), he may be exempted from submitting the document;

4.          In case the parties intending to marry have made a prenuptial agreement in the Public Notary Office (CN), they have to submit that agreement to the Civil Affairs Registry (CRC) before or on the date of the celebration of marriage, or they have to declare the existence of such an agreement in the Civil Affairs Registry (CRC) when they start the marriage process.

Due to different situations, before the application for marriage registration, it is advisable that one of the parties intending to marry should take the photocopies of the identity documents of both parties to the Civil Affairs Registry (CRC) to obtain information about documents required for the application.
