Chiwan Tianhou Temple, located at the foot of Small Nanshan adjacent to Chiwan Village in Nanshan District. There are beautiful hills and waters. It has been imposing since it was built in Song Dynasty. After renovated several times in Ming and Qing dynasties, the scale has broadened gradually. Early in the Wanli Ming Dynasty, the eunuch Zheng He, with the order of Ming Emperor Zhuli, captained a fleet to travel the West, who opened the “Silk Road at Sea.” Chiwan Tianhou Temple is one of the major stations on the road. “Chiwan Scenic Spots” who takes Chiwan Tianhou Temple as the center, is regarded as the No.1 of “Xin’an Eight Scenery” of Ming & Qing Period. Tianhou’s Birthday is the largest sacrifice activity in Chiwan Tianhou Temple. Beside the populace, officials would go there for the memorial ceremony during the spring and autumn every year. Since it was a major station of the “Silk Road at Sea,” Ming Dynasty had issued an article: all envoys accredited to the south and east countries should stop to sacrifice when ran through it. What’s more, Hong Kong Lu Yan wrote in “Hong Kong Anecdotes”, “As Chiwan Tianhou Temple is very magnificent. On the 23rd in the third lunar month, that is Tianhou’s birthday, all people in the waterfront of Kowloon, Hong Kong go to Chiwan Tianhou Temple to celebrate Tianhou’s birthday.

Architectural Characteristics

Chiwan Tin Hau Temple, in its best time, had tens buildings and more than 120 houses, including temple gate, decorated archway, sun moon pool, stone bridge, bell tower, Front Hall, main hall, right and left side hall, wing rooms, guest rooms, gallery, corner pavilions, Stele Pavilions, etc. It has an area of over 900 Ares with lofty building and spectacular appearance. It is not only the largest Tianhou temple having 99 gates in china’s coastal areas, and but also the most prestigious culture landscape in Shenzhen’s history. It has been admired in Hong Kong, Macao and Southeast Asian countries. It is also a key relic Protection Site in Shenzhen.
