WIPO Regional Seminar Held in Hong Kong
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Regional Seminar was held on 29th Oct. in Hong Kong. Through practical cases, the experts discussed how the small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) took advantages of Intellectual Capital Management (ICM), Knowledge Assets Management (KAM) and Intellectual Property Management (IPM) to upgrade their Competitive forces.
This two-day Regional Seminar was held by Intellectual Property Department of HKSAR, which focused its theme on “Intellectual Capital, Knowledge Assets and Intellectual Property Management.” There were about 200 government departments, education institutions and business delegates from Asian countries and regions taking part in this seminar.
The meeting was chaired by Wang Binyin, the WIPO Assistant Director-General, Lu Guoliang, the International Cooperation Director of SIPO and Cai Yingbi, the Permanent Secretary of Hong Kong Government Commerce and Economic Development Bureau. Lu indicated that this international conference highlighted Hong Kong’s advantages in the field of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and the national support to Hong Kong, which was just conformed with Hong Kong’s strategic policy of committing to knowledge economy development.
Cai said that the idea to introduce ICM would greatly benefit the enterprises and improve their competitiveness, which would also help deal with the shock of international financial crisis and the impact of economic downturn.
As an international organization, WIPO was founded under the “Convention Establishing the World intellectual organization” and turned into a specialized agency of IPR in the UN in December of 1974, whose aims are to promote the worldwide protection of intellectual property and ensure administrative cooperation between the Intellectual Property Alliances through cooperation among countries, or if necessary, through collaboration with other international organizations.
