The Origin of Da Fen Oil Painting Village

Da Fen Village, within the jurisdiction of Buji Street of Longgang District in Shenzhen, covers an area of 0.4 m2, in which there are over 300 residents. In 1989, a Hong Kong art dealer came to Da Fen Village, who hired many students and painters to create, imitate, collect or resell oil paintings in rented civilian houses. Thus, the special industry—painting—entered into Da Fen Village. With more and more painters entered Da Fen Village, “Da Fen Oil Painting” grows to be a famous culture brand at home and abroad. Since 1998, the distrcit and town government got to improve the environment in Da Fen Village, regulating and leading the development of oil painting markets. They also made many efforts on propoganda, which promoted the development of Da Fen Oil Painting Village as a unique cultural brand.

The Scale of Da Fen Oil Painting Village

Based on the latest data, there were about 800 stores engaged in oil painting and over 5000 painters living in Da Fen Oil Painting Village by May, 2008. Da Fen Oil Painting Village mainly works on the original oil painting and the processing of imitating art works. It also carries on the Supporting industries such as Chinese painting, calligraphy, crafts, sculpture and picture frames, pigment and so on, which form an Oil Paiting Industrial Circle which takes Da Fen Village as a core, while still gets Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangxi, Hong Kong and Macao involved.

Since 2004, many state leaders inspected Da Fen Oil Painting Village such as Wu Bangguo, Li Changchun, Zeng Qinghong, Chen Zhili, Li Tieying, Hua Jianmin, Li Guixian,etc. Da Fen Oil Painting Village is entitled as the national “Cultural Industry Model Base”, “Culture (Art) Industry Demonstration Base”, “2006 China’s Best Creative Industry Parks”, “Copyright Industrial Demonstration Base in Guangdong Province”, “Most beautiful Human History Tourism Demonstration Sites in Guangdong”, “Shenzhen Cultural Industry Model Base”, “Shenzhen Copyright Industrial Demonstration Base”, “One of Longgang Eight Sights • Great Da Fen” by the Ministry of Culture, the Chinese Artists Association, Secretary Ministry of Culture Industry, Committee of the Chinese creative industries’ Year Awards, Guangdong Copyright Bureau, the Guangdong Tourism Bureau, Shenzhen cultural system and legislation Leading Group, Shenzhen Municipal Intellectual Property Bureau, Shenzhen Copyright Bureau and so on. In Oct. 2007, the second “Creative China • Harmonious World” Beijing Culture Original Industry Internation Forum Committee entitled Da Fen Oil Paiting Village as “Cutting-edge 2007! The Most Brand-Valuable Village”, while the Ministry of Culture awarded Da Fen Oil Painting Village the title of “Outstanding Export of Cultural Goods and Services” as well.
