Huawei leads the development of MPLS-TP standard

Due to the adding of compatibility to the existing MPLS technology and its ability to meet the demands of easy and efficient transportation of the packet service on an all-round base, the standardization process of the MPLS-TP technology developed from T-MPLS has attracted close attentions of the industry.

Since participated in the drafting of T-MPLS standards in 2004, Huawei who is the main contributor for the T-MPLS standards following Alcatel-lucent has been successively assigned as the Editor of the main standards of T-MPLS, including T-MPLS equipment (ITU-T G.8121) T-MPLS OAM (ITU-T G.mplstpoam), T-MPLS linear protection (ITU-T G.8131), T-MPLS ring protection (ITU-T G.8132), and T-MPLS interface (ITU-T G.8112) etc.

After the promotion of the Joint Working Team, Huawei, by virtue of its accumulated advantages on T-MPLS standard, continues to engage in the drafting of MPLS-TP standard and have the title of the Co-Chair and core member, whose contribution on MPLS-TP standard has covered the prophase guidance, the drafting of the demands and the development of the detailed mechanism, especially the OAM and protection.

By now, Huawei has submitted 13 IETF drafts, including five formal drafts of the work group and RFC 5654(MPLS-TP requirement) which is the most important one in the four RFC drafts currently and the base for the MPLS-TP protocol work.

Huawei who has been actively involved in the research and development in the field of MPLS-TP has united the alliance on the industry chain, including operators, equipment manufacturers and chip manufacturers to jointly promote the maturation and industrialization of the MPLS-TP standard and finally become the leader of the MPLS-TP standard together with Alcatel-lucent, Cisco, Ericsson etc.

In September 2009, several manufacturers including Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson and Alcatel-lucnet participate in the multi-vendor interworking test organized by European Advanced Network Test Center (“”EANTC), when Alcatel-lucent and Huawei successfully achieved the interworking test of the MPLS-TP, including the ITU-T Y.1731 based MPLS-TP OAM mechanism and the Automatic Protection Switching Protocol based protection switching mechanism, which indicate that the MPLS-TP standard has been further improved.

MPLS-TP, evolved from T-MPLS, is firstly put forward by ITU-T in 2005, aiming at using MPLS technology to realize easy and high effective packet transport. T-MPLS adopts the same transfer mechanism with MPLS, but simplify the three-layer technology that have nothing to do with the transport in the MPLS technology, enhancing the OAM and protection mechanism, which make up the defect that it’s not enough to support the transport network. The control surface can adopt the Generalized MPLS and realize the separation of the data surface and control surface, guaranteeing the normal operation without control surface.

In February 2008, the MPLS interoperability Design Team of IETF and the T-MPLS ad hoc group of ITU-T formed the Joint Working Team to develop the T-MPLS/MPLS-TP standard and changed T-MPLS into MPLS-TP.
