Shenzhen Tong to tie up with Octopus card in 2010

President of Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Chen Delin said yesterday the two-in-one smart card of Hong Kong’s “Octopus” and Shenzhen’s “Shenzhen Tong” will be available within one year, which could be used both in Hong Kong and Shenzhen for shopping and traveling.

On the “Second Pearl River Delta Forum” jointly held Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre and Guangdong’s Association for Promotion of Cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong &Macao yesterday, President of Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Chen Delin said Hong Kong and Shenzhen now is striving to develop a new card reader for both Shenzhen Tong and Octopus within one year. Then they will become usable in both in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, which will benefit Hong Kong for attracting more mainland tourists to spend money in Hong Kong.

Song Haiyan, chair professor and associate director of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Polytechnic University of Hong Kong, commented that this is just one step toward integration in the PRD region. “In the future, we may see more methods for the monetary integration between Hong Kong and the mainland,” he said

Chen Delin said the current using condition of e-money card, which are mostly used for transportation, in the nine cities in the Pearl River Delta is in disorder and the interconnection between the cities is limited. Shenzhen and Hong Kong is expecting to make the Pearl River Delta into a one-hour living circle, making the interconnection and interaction of the two cities closer. The long term target of the two governments of Shenzhen and Hong Kong is to make all the residents of the two cities to use the two-in-one e-money card.
