Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Shenzhen High-Speed Railway to Run in 2014

The design of Shenzhen-Hong Kong cross-border segment of Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway has come out. According to the plan, Shenzhen-Hong Kong cross-border section will be connected with the Hong Kong section and put into running in 2014. If it runs, the whole way from Shenzhen to West Kowloon just needs 16 minutes.

According to the latest design, the whole length of Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway is 146 km, of which Guangzhou-Shenzhen section is about 116 km. It starts at Guangzhou South Station (the new Guangzhou Railway Station), east to Panyu, Dongguan, Shenzhen North Station (the New Shenzhen Railway Station). It crosses Futian District and Huanggang in tunnel, and goes across Shenzhen River to connect with Hong Kong section. Hong Kong section starts at the Shenzhen-Hong Kong boundaries of Shenzhen River to Mai Po Nature Reserve, Shek Kong, Kowloon urban area, and ends at the West Kowloon Station, the full line of which is 26 km made of tunnels and underground stations.

At present, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen section is laying tracks now, which is expected to start running by the end of the year. The line will use the latest Mainland self-developed CRTS Ⅰ-type no fragments slab tracks in order to ensure the target speed for the line part of 350 kmh and 250 kmh or more for on-line part. After the operation, it will only costs about 20 minutes from Guangzhou to Shenzhen.

If Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway is completed, it will only take 40 minutes (now 100 minutes) from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, then the temporal and spatial distance to Beijing or Shanghai and other areas will be greatly shortened. At that time Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region will form one hour’s or two hours’ economic circle, which will have a great impact on Hong Kong’s economy and society.
