No, I don’t think restaurants Hong Kong serve cats and dogs. I have never been there but I do know many people from there. Not even one of them ate a dog and most of them dislike the idea as much as we do.

I think the reson that people belive it is because of the mistrust of foreigners (particularly Chinese) and our culture’s opposing attitude towards cats and dogs. But sinces Hong Kong was under British rule for such a long time most of the people don’t view dogs and cas as food anymore.

In some countries they eat insects, I understand it is quite good.

I have eaten dog in the Philippines. I did not care for it, too greasy. I am not aware if I have eaten cat but I suspect not since it would probably cost more to raise cats for slaughter as opposed to chickens.

As far as Hong Kong, I have little knowledge of Hong Kong, never been there, looks too techno for me. Nevertheless, if they outlawed eating cats and dogs, more power to them, if not, more power to them as well. If people are breaking the law, then they are breaking the law — get over it. It’s not like every one of us have never broken the law. How about the guy that smoking a joint right now, or the other that is sending threatening email, or the other who hasn’t paid taxes in years, or the one who’s heating their home with illegally obtained firewood, or the one who poached Bambi, or hell, went 40mph in a 35. The list is endless.

Who in the hell are we to tell other cultures what to do? We should be embracing diversity instead of ugly Americanizing every other culture to death in our never ending quest for self righteousness. Even McDonalds understands that because in India they adjusted their menu to take into account the taboo against beef eating. Or how about that cute pot bellied pig that so may find adorable? How about investing in pork bellies while you stare at that little critter. Little Bambi, watch it again then take out your .270 and murder one, then explain to your 8 year old you did it for sport. (I fail to understand how that is sport, unless the deer can shoot back)

The American society is so full of contradictions that one could write a best seller on that alone.

America and the rest of the world that continually tells other cultures how to live need to butt the hell out. Until you live in a country and understand their ways, then you have no right to complain. And if you do, take the American fix it attitude and burn it, then you will quickly find out that what other countries do, you’ll learn to roll with the punches and get up smiling.

Hell yeah it’s perfectly normal to eat them. They even serve bear’s paws and monkey brains. It’s illegal but there’s always a demand for them. I dun think it could be THAT common. You’d have to be a really important and rich person to even consume such ‘delicacies’.

Dog or cat are popular in Hong Kong, but when I was last there I couldn’t find it in Pizza Hut. There are lots of restaurants serving local dishes as well as international cuisine. Go to Aberdeen, the floating village, there is a big boat that is a restaurant there (can’t remember the name but I’m sure it’s an animal, elephant or something) specialises in seafood. Be careful though – the dog and cat bit was serious!

P.S.
Ai-leen – yes I have been to Hong Kong and indeed I am there again at the end of July! By your own statement, killing and eating of dogs and cats does go off (I know it’s illegal and ok the “pizza hut” was a joke) because as you say the guy was caught and put in jail! Also in Beijing, there is a saying about the people from the Canton region (a strong influence in Hong Kong cuisine) “the only thing that flys that they don’t eat is an aeroplane and the only thing with four legs that they don’t eat is the table”. I have visited markets in Canton where cat and dog are in cages and sold as food alongside the chickens, ducks and pigs.
