Electric bike restrictions enhanced in Shenzhen

The Draft Management Rules on Road Traffic Safety in Shenzhen Special Economic Area was submitted to the 11th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 5th Shenzhen Municipal Government’s Congress for approval, which will restrict electric bicycles in designated areas, roads and hours in Shenzhen.

The electric bikes that are used for special-purpose in the industries such as logistics and postal services could be required to obtain certificates before they are allowed to go on the road. The city government would be authorized to implement the restrictions according to the draft.

Rules used to regulate that the electric bikes weighing more than 40 kilograms and running at speeds of more than 20 kilometers were to be restricted. But the latest draft, with obscure regulation, stipulates that vehicles that fail to meet the “national standards” will not be allowed to go on the road. The main reason for the restriction is because the number of traffic accidents caused by electric bikes has been increasing in recent years.

The latest draft, the government also introduced charges for roadside car parking and determined the parking fees, which would be used to develop public transport.
