X-ray machines in Shenzhen unauthorized
The installment of over 280 X-ray security check machines for baggage at Shenzhen metro stations was not authorized by the city’s environmental protection authority, which has constituted violation of the national law.
For holding the 26th Summer Universiade, Shenzhen started setting a total of 286 X-ray machines, with a combined value of 120 million Yuan, at the stations of five metro lines from June 28 this year, according to the city’s rail traffic office.
However, Mr. Li, who is engaged in medical radiation work, noticed those security check machines had no Radiation Safety Certificate issued by the environmental authorities.
What is the radiation leakage condition of the X-ray security check machines at the metro stations and what impact it could cause to the environment? Relevant authority conducted on-site testing work on the X-ray machines at Meilin metro station of Line 4 and Jingtian metro station of Line2 on September 24. It was found the radiation leakage is above the nationally permitted level.
Besides, the X-ray machines have not been used properly, the paper said. The staff operating the machines did not conduct a regular check on radiation leakage, and none was tested on their knowledge before being permitted to use the machines.
Besides giving radiation leakage, the X-ray baggage security check machines also give out ozone, oxidation and other gas, which would impact the air quality. But the impact of the X-ray security check machines to the air quality has not been included in the monitoring items by environmental department.
