Parents with children under 3 to have more days off
As an important social construction, the General Equality Regulations (draft) in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was first proposed on the 11th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People’s Congress for approval. It is the first attempt of the regulation for general equality in Shenzhen, aiming at promoting the equality between men and women and the sustainable development of the economic society.
According to the Draft, parents with children under the age of 3 will be able take an extra five days off every year, and the wages and welfares will be paid by the employers according relevant national regulations. Subsistence allowance will be paid by Birth Insurance Fund to the women, who are in accordance with the birth control policy.
The purpose of the paid holiday was to encourage fathers to spend more time helping raise their children. While it was warmly welcomed by women, some male residents preferred to work because it was much harder to take care of children. “It’s enough for men to take days off when their wives give birth,” said Ma Hongbin, a man with a 2-year-old child. “It’s hard enough taking care of the wife and child during that period.”
The draft regulation also proposed to offer temporary refuge and support for those escaping domestic violence. Employers who place requirements on gender in job advertising would face a penalty of 5,000 yuan to 30,000 yuan.
