Shenzhen to participate in next farmers’ games

Shenzhen planned to participate in the third Guangdong farmers’ sports meeting after refusing to attend the second meeting last week with the reason that the city has no farmers.

The provincial department of agriculture pointed out Shenzhen might have some misunderstanding of the concept of “farmer”. The city agriculture and fisheries bureau said they would participate in the next games.

After being suspended for 23 years, the second farmers’ sports meeting was held last week in Jiangmen, but Shenzhen refused to participate, saying there had been no farmers in Shenzhen since urbanization in 2004. Officials of the agriculture and fisheries bureau made explanation that, after urbaniz ation in 2004, Shenzhen has become the first city that has no country organic system. So it was not necessary to waste time and resources to take part in the farmers’ sports meeting. The refusal has attracted wide attention of the society.

However, Yu Jian’e, general secretary of the sports meeting’s organizing committee, said Shenzhen misunderstood the requirements of the meeting. “All farmers with Guangdong hukou, or permanent residency, could attend the meeting. Many netizens thought the departments should have solicited farmers’ opinions before the meeting. “It was their event, so it was important to ask them whether they wanted to have a sports meeting. It should not be decided by provincial or municipal governments,” said Liang Hongqing, vice chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Farmer’s Sports Association.
