Equipment Failure Caused Blackout in Shenzhen

A large area blackout caused by equipment failure occurred in Luohu, Futian and Longgang districts at about 8:30 pm and lasted about two hours on April 10, which has caused great attention of the city’s government and party committee.

Through preliminary investigation of the power supply bureau, the blackout was caused by switch failure in a 500 kilovolt transformer substation in Longgang district. The blackout affected parts of Luohu, Futian, Longgang and Nanshan, sending businesses, streets and residential buildings into darkness, delaying several trains and trapping many people in elevators. Fortunately, no people were hurt in the accident and no properties were destroyed.

The blackout, the largest in ten years, has caused great attention of the party committee and the government of the city. Soon after it occurred, Standing Member of the Provincial Party Committee and Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, Wang Rong, and Mayor of Shenzhen, Xu Qin required the power supply bureau to make the best effort to resume the power in the shortest time. Relevant persons from the State Electricity Regulatory Commission and other authorities went to the site in Shenzhen on the same night to supervise the power resuming work.

Shenzhen power supply bureau apologized for the blackout that has caused inconvenience to the citizens. The power supply was widely restored by 10:10 p.m

The cause of the accident is under further investigation.
